School of Journalism Education Abroad Scholarships: The School of Journalism offers several scholarship to help our students to access Education Abroad opportunities. Complete this application form to be considered for any of these opportunities:

School of Journalism study abroad scholarships are applied to a student’s university account to support participation in a program during the upcoming summer or the fall or spring semesters of next academic year. To be considered, applicants must complete the application form for this scholarship opportunity.
Larry Lee Overseas Study Scholarship: Larry Lee, a 1970 graduate of the School of Journalism at MSU, spent a career in Lansing covering politics and public affairs for Gongwer News Service, a pioneering enterprise specializing in intensive reporting on those state-based issues. At MSU he began to appreciate the importance of a world view in addressing problems. Extensive travel throughout his life underscored the great opportunities to enhance learning by extended exposure to people in other countries. To that end, this scholarship is intended to make those opportunities available to Journalism students at MSU.

- Scholarships will be awarded to students participating in MSU-approved Education Abroad programs
- Full-time undergraduate or graduate students in the School of Journalism and must meet the school’s minimum GPA requirements.
Elizabeth Mangner Neil Overseas Study Scholarship in Journalism: Elizabeth Mangner Neil supported her grandson, Craig J. Gehring, in his six-month overseas study experience to Yugoslavia when he attended MSU. The experience was a life-changing event for him, giving him an understanding and appreciation of other cultures. Gehring established the Elizabeth Mangner Neil Overseas Study Scholarship for School of Journalism undergraduate majors with at least junior standing in honor of his grandmother.
Qualifications:
- Applicants will submit a statement indicating why they feel overseas study is of value to them and how this experience will help prepare them for their intended career
- Recipients will be undergraduate majors in the School of Journalism and will be at least a junior when the award is given
- Priority will be given to those with no overseas experience and to those enrolled in overseas study courses offered by the School of Journalism
- Financial need may be considered.
Susan L. Silk Journalism Study Abroad Scholarship in Journalism: As a professional with a distinguished career in journalism and public relations, Susan Silk places great value on the quality of education students receive as undergraduates. She understands that overseas travel and study provides not only educational opportunity, but personal growth. Ms. Silk’s intention is to encourage and provide the means necessary for an average journalism student with financial need to enjoy this opportunity.
Qualifications
- Applicants will submit a statement indicating why they feel Education Abroad is of value to them and how this experience will help prepare them for their intended career
- Undergraduate major in the School of Journalism
- Financial need
- Additionally, the recipient is required to submit an essay after the completion of the study abroad describing the experience.
Mary Gardner Study in Mexico, Latin America or Border Town Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded to a student planning to study in Mexico (preference) or Latin America or a U.S. border town. Funds may also be used for study-related expenses such as, but not limited to, travel and lodging.
Professor Mary Gardner joined the journalism faculty in 1966 where she became the first woman faculty member with tenure. She retired from MSU in 1991 after a distinguished career as a teacher and scholar. In addition to mentoring hundreds of students at MSU and the University of Texas at Austin, Professor Gardner served as the first woman president of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. Dr. Gardner also contributed to the development of an independent press system in Mexico and spent every summer for 20 years running a summer journalism workshop for El Norte, a newspaper in Monterrey, Mexico.

- GPA of 3.2 or higher
- Journalism major
- 90 credits or junior status
- Preference to students who have either The State News or other professional experience/internship
