Mary Gardner Endowment Scholarships and Honors
Mary Gardner Study in Mexico, Latin America or Border Town Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded to a student planning to study in Mexico (preference) or Latin America or a U.S. border town. Funds may also be used for study-related expenses such as, but not limited to, travel and lodging.
Professor Mary Gardner joined the journalism faculty in 1966 where she became the first woman faculty member with tenure. She retired from MSU in 1991 after a distinguished career as a teacher and scholar. In addition to mentoring hundreds of students at MSU and the University of Texas at Austin, Professor Gardner served as the first woman president of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. Dr. Gardner also contributed to the development of an independent press system in Mexico and spent every summer for 20 years running a summer journalism workshop for El Norte, a newspaper in Monterrey, Mexico.
Qualifications:
- GPA of 3.2 or higher
- Journalism major
- 90 credits or junior status
- Preference to students who have either The State News or other professional experience/internship
School of Journalism study abroad scholarships are applied to a student’s university account to support participation in a program during the upcoming summer or the fall or spring semesters of next academic year. To be considered, applicants must complete the School of Journalism Education Abroad Scholarships application.
